Holy Oatmeal

No, my breakfast this morning was not blessed by a spiritual leader. It was just really good and that is what I was thinking in my head when I was eating hooverizing them ;)

I had my first bowl of steel cut oats! I’ve actually never made it past the Quaker Old Fashioned Oats or quick oats, so today was definitely an adventure :)

In the Mix:

  • 1/4 c. steel cut oats
  • 1 c. almond milk
  • 1/4 c. So Delcious Coconut Milk Creamer

Added in half way through:

  • goji berries
  • flaxseed meal
  • chia seeds

(all unmeasured amounts, but probably about a tablespoon each)

Topped with:

  • 1/2 a microwaved banana
  • coconut shreds
  • macadamia nut butter

Because I added the coconut milk creamer into the mix while it was boiling, the oats were very sweet. I could have just eaten the liquid part of the oats, it was so good.

Snack

I joined Kalli in her usual Friday Smoothies. I was only a little bit hungry, so I made a very small smoothie.

Into the blender went:

  • 1/4 c. frozen cranberries
  • 1/3 c. frozen pineapple
  • 1/2 a banana
  • about 1 T Vega mix
  • unknown amount of almond milk

The vega mix put the smoothie over to top. I definitely need to add more than a table spoon of the mix. Apparently one serving was 1/12th of the bag.

I’m off to unpack even more. I’m meeting up with a friend from high school a little later on tonight, then going to my cabin for the weekend.

What is everyone up to this weekend?

and

What are your favorite kind of oats?

  1. I like rolled oats the best. They are chewy, creamy, and delicious :)

  2. The oats look amazing! I just tried steel cut oats for the first time a few weeks ago and I loved them! I think I am going to cook with my cousin this weekend. She wants help with gluten free/dairy free meals. Hopefully we will get a little garden going too! Good luck with the unpacking!

  3. Steel cut oats are the best…they take a little longer to prepare, but it’s so worth it!! Hope you enjoy your weekend girl!

  4. I still have yet to try steel cut! But I love multigrain hot cereal the best. It’s a nice mixture of barley, oats, rye, and rolled wheat.

  5. This weekend I’m probably going home to visit my parents–I’ll be out of state during Father’s Day weekend so I think I’m going to celebrate this weekend.

As for oats, I know I’m basically sinning by saying this, but I’m just not a big fan of oats. I don’t know, I just find them boring.

But pancakes on the other hand, now THAT’S a breakfast of champions.

    Have a great weekend, girl!

  6. I still haven’t ventured away from quacker oatmeal. I think I need to try something new!

I’m running my first 1/2 marathon this weekend :)

  7. I definitely need to get my hands on some of that vega mix! I think my favorite oats would have to be chocolate peanut butter – mmmm so good, it’s almost too sinful for breakfast!

  8. well we bought some steel cut a while back..and my mom and i both didn’t like them…BUT come to find out…the last 2 servings that i had of them..i made them with more milk and banana..and they were freaking amazing…the whole time i was cooking them..i was using WAY to little liquid..i think..lol..what is the ratio of grain to water for steel cut??? (i need to try them again!)…the right way…:)

  9. YUMM I want your oatmeal! I really like “carrot cake” oats.

  10. AHHH yay for OATMEAL girl!!!! I LOVE me some oats!! SO comforting, right?

  11. ive been wondering how steel cut oats compare to the regular ones. i really want to try some now!! they look chewier!!

    did they taste any different?

    food porn for sure ;)

  12. Steel cut oats are my favorite! Because they take longer to cook, I usually make a batch in the evening (or mornings when I have more time) for 4-servings. Then I can just do a quick heat up in the microwave and add the toppings on those mornings when I’m rushing to get things moving!
Great blog – my first visit!

  13. Your right – those oats look AMAZING! Loving those toppings and the creamer idea :)
I used to love steel cut oats – but haven’t had just them in a while. Lately I’ve sort of brought them back when I make overnight oats, though :)

  14. the macadamia nut butter really does make it food porn! haha looks so good

  15. Wow, those oats look soo doughy and delicious! I’m an Old Fashioned oats kind of gal, but I’ve never had steel cut, so maybe I’d like those more. hehe
